Rinat Akhmetov, the president of FC Shakhtar Donetsk, commented on the situation around the joint bid of Ukraine and Poland when answering journalists' questions.
Rinat Leonidovich, what do you think about the UEFA-related scandal regarding Ukraine’s entitlement to host UEFA EURO 2012?
"I am used to trusting court decisions. I am sure that Ukraine has deserved to hold UEFA EURO 2012, and my personal opinion is that, generally speaking, that’s nothing more than an unsubstantiated piece of gossip. Time is the Lord Chief Justice in this case. I am confident that Ukraine will decently host UEFA EURO 2012, that we will duly meet guests in our city and that everyone will be happy. We did deserve to be singled out."
In connection with the scandal, don’t you think that some matches may be cancelled?
"No. I do not. Ukraine does not deserve cancelled matches. If someone says something, one must prove that in court. That is, at least, the case will come to trial and we will respect whatever ruling the court issues. I am convinced that Ukraine was not involved in any scandals; we have done everything possible in order to hold Euro 2012 in the proper way. I am sure that all Ukrainians deserve that the tournament is held at a very high level, to the top European standards."
